1. General information
The supervised internships develop transversal competencies and integrate knowledge and skills acquired throughout the entire degree program. The training of an optician-optometrist is incomplete without having been able to develop field practices in a real working environment in a supervised manner. After completing the subject, students will be more competent in using their acquired knowledge in their professional practice.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/), in such a way that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement:
Goal 3: Health and wellness
Goal 4: Quality Education.
2. Learning results
Apply the knowledge acquired in the previous modules in optical establishments, clinics, hospitals and companies in the sector
Perform clinical activities related to refraction, visual examination, contact lens fitting, visual training and low vision.
Apply the techniques for mounting corrections or visual compensations in glasses and possible retouching of contact lenses.
Contact with product marketing, procurement, storage, preservation and information.
Know and apply the techniques of manufacturing visual aids and optical and optometric instruments.
Know the different protocols of action depending on the patient.
Know the indications and procedure for the performance and interpretation of the complementary tests required in the vision consultation.
Perform the protocol for patient care in the optometric office/clinic.
Take a medical record appropriate to the patient's profile.
Select and apply correctly in each case all the skills, abilities and competences acquired in optometry.
Encourage collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
Communicate and inform the patient of all acts and tests to be performed and clearly explain the results and their diagnosis.
Correct and effective implementation of the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the degree in a real situation
Ability to clearly write a portfolio of completed cases.
Ability to perform a critical analysis a posteriori of the cases performed during the internship.
3. Syllabus
Grade (MECES 2)
4. Academic activities
Supervised internships in professional positions as an optician-optometrist.
Analysis and discussion of their experiences with a University tutor.
Common presentations of interesting cases dealt with (approximately 3 cases per week worked). A case should consist of a detailed introduction indicating the situation faced, a section describing how the case was solved (it does not have to have been solved by the student) and, finally, a final section where a critical personal analysis made of how the case was solved and what other possible solutions could have been carried out
5. Assessment system
The student will have two tutors, one at the centre where the internship is carried out (company tutor) and the other at the University (academic tutor). Between them, they will ensure the correct development of their internships and the completion of a portfolio of cases developed during the internship. The minimum required levels of depth of work for the case portfolios will be set by the subject coordinators at the beginning of the term.
-Oral defence of the cases developed in the portfolio in front of the tutor at the University (individual). At least two oral defence sessions will be developed in which the student will defend the cases done in front of the tutor at the University. The first oral defence is for half of the cases performed and the second for the second half. It is up to the student and the tutor at the University to arrange additional defence sessions of the cases.
-Large group public presentations (oral or poster) of a case study with subsequent discussion of the questions posed via the teaching digital ring (ADD).
The company tutor and the academic tutor will issue a brief report on the academic and formative value of the work done by the student during the internship.
An 80% of the grade will correspond to the reports made by the academic tutors, based on the activity carried out by the student in the internship, the portfolio of cases delivered and the individual presentations of such cases. The remaining 20% will correspond to the public presentation. This last 20% is divided into 20%, which will correspond to the written summary that the student will present for the initial evaluation of the work, and 80% to the grade awarded by the board of examiners of the public presentation.
